Police Professional: 'Caught on Camera'

The proliferation of CCTV cameras that have sprung up in our towns and cities over the last ten years has led to the accusation that the UK now lives in a ‘big brother’ society.

There are currently 4.2 million cameras in the UK – one for every 14 people. Despite the growth in cameras, there is no standards system for controlling the gathering or identification of CCTV images in the 43 forces.

The Home Office Crime Reduction Programme CCTV Initiative has provided over £170 million wor th of funding to over 680 CCTV schemes. The first CCTV strategy was produced last year with the aim of promoting national standards of consistency for the use of CCTV across the UK.
