Facial Biometric Solutions for Law Enforcement
Facial Images for Custody Suites and Criminal Investigation
Today’s police forces are making increasingly extensive use of facial images in addition to fingerprint, DNA and other long established forensic techniques. Standardised facial imaging and facial biometrics are becoming an increasingly important part of the police toolkit.
The UK police forces’ custody image standard (previously the 'FIND' standard) is a good example – designed to facilitate:
- the consistent capture of facial images in police custody suites up and down the UK
- the interchangeability and interoperability of facial images, within and between forces
- the use of facial image data as an additional 'tool in the box' for criminal investigations.
A toolkit developed with the police community, for the police community
OmniPerception has been working for over five years with the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) and its predecessor the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) to create and deliver effective facial imaging solutions that serve the needs of the Law Enforcement community in the UK and beyond. After successful field trials in 2007 and 2008, these solutions are now in widespread use by British Police forces, forming part of the famous AFIT™ range (Affinity™ Facial Imaging Toolkit). The range incorporates three main product groups:
- AFIT.QA™ Image Quality Assurance quality assurance and image standards conformance software tools
- Colossus™ facial identification and large scale facial search engine software
- Integrated versions of the above, built into 'plug and play' solutions from OmniPerception’s trusted associate the DW Group Ltd (in their DIB and DIR products)
These products are currently helping to deliver effective facial imaging solutions for the law enforcement community throughout the UK.

“This [using the DIR with Colossus™ inside] not only speeds up the custody process and enables officers to spend more time on the streets, it also provides officers with valuable intelligence on individual offenders.” Assistant Chief Constable Simon Byrne, Merseyside Police
