Case Study: Secure Access Control - Airport Cargo

OmniPerception’s access control solution helps enhance security for Menzies Aviation cargo handling sites

During 2009 Menzies Aviation plc, a global provider of passenger, ramp, cargo handling and cargo airfreight wholesaling services, identified a need to increase the security within some of its facilities.

Given the business it is in, Security and Safety is Menzies’ highest priority.  Towards that end, the project’s objective was to ensure that only authorised people were able to access secure areas within the cargo facilities. This included Menzies Aviation’s full time staff, staff from regular suppliers as well as government bodies such as the UK Border Agency.

Menzies Aviation already had an existing access control system in place supplied by WorkPlace Systems; therefore any additional security systems considered for this project had to operate in conjunction with the existing solution, adding a further layer of protection.

This requirement was perfectly suited to OmniPerception’s CheckPoint™ access control solution. CheckPoint™ is the ideal solution for organisations and businesses that require enhanced security, and it guarantees verified identity to provide security to any business. It incorporates world leading face recognition technology to deliver uniquely fast and accurate performance in a wide range of face activated biometric applications.

Stuart Brook, VP IT Operations and Communications said: “We analysed numerous biometric technologies and suppliers back in 2009 and concluded that OmniPerception both as a technology and organisation fitted in with the Menzies Aviation philosophy.  The solution as a whole was not without its challenges but the team of suppliers alongside Menzies Aviation worked well together to provide a “best in class” access control security system”.

WorkPlace Systems acted as the prime contractor and CheckPoint™ was supplied to Menzies Aviation within a 120 degree locking turnstile which further increases site security. By using facial recognition through OmniPerception’s CheckPoint™, Menzies Aviation can be sure that the right person is gaining access, and the turnstile provides additional security as it only allows one person at a time into the site.

CheckPoint™ completes over 27,000 transactions per week at their first facility, and after an extensive trial, there are plans to extend the benefits that CheckPoint™ offers to the other Menzies Aviation sites.  The system complements the extensive IT capability that Menzies uses to provide safe and secure, reliable, and effective service delivery to airlines and other customers at over 119 airports in 27 countries.

Stewart Hefferman from OmniPerception said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Menzies Aviation selected OmniPerception’s CheckPoint™ unit to secure their facility.  It is essential that facilities such as those operated by Menzies are protected by robust, reliable and state of the art security systems.  We see this as the start of an important association that will provide enhanced security to this sector.”
